pikiskwe-speak (Lana gets her talk)

Over the past three years, I have been photographing for Beth Wishart MacKenzie’s film

From capturing the events on the opening day of the movie in Edmonton in 2017 to photographing the amazing art pieces for the the interactive website that was recently completed, it has been my honour to photograph for two such extraordinary, creative, strong women.

I hope you will visit the website and participate in this beautiful work of reconciliation through the Conversation Through Word section, or the Conversation Through Art.

Heritage Apartment Building

If you’ve met me, you know I love my community of Norwood – Alberta Avenue. I love the heritage buildings, the walkablity (the Italian Centre, Commonwealth, The Carrot, Norwood School), the sense of small-town community (but can still walk to downtown!) and most of all the strong sense of belonging created by the people who live there.

I have no interest in gentrifying the neighbourhood (I am strongly in favour of Safe Injection Sites, for example), but at the same time, it should be a safe community for all of us. This is why I am so pleased there is a new owner for this apartment building. They have been cleaned up (both physically and metaphorically) and are renting, at affordable prices. It is such an amazing little building – if you’re in the market for a bachelor or 1 bedroom suite, check it out!

Did you know that Beatrix Potter used to be a mycologist (mushroom scientist) before she was a children’s author. And it was she who discovered that lichen is a symbiotic relationship between lichen and algae? If you find some old mycology books (there is one at the University of Alberta), you might find her beautiful drawings of mushrooms and lichen. You’ll recognise her style.

I too have always been fascinated by the minitature. I have a degree in microbiology – and although I have not used it professionally, I am fascinated by the natural world.

These lichen grow all over the deck at the lake cabin. I have always meant to photograph them. They look like little worlds – something out of a Dr. Suess book – and this year, I finally got around to it (mostly because my husband brought the macro lenses, which I always forget.)

I was interviewed by the wonderful Catherine Potter. If you’d like to hear what I have to say about photography, storms, relaxing in front of the camera and cow poop, have a listen.

Storm Chaser

This beautiful shelf cloud rolled in at the end of our family’s July birthday celebration last night. We were out in the country, but this was over Edmonton.

I could be a storm chaser – but I would totally die. I stood on top of a tractor to get this shot.

And just so you know, my dream job is to do an article for National Geographic.

Art Reimer

I had the chance to photograph Art Reimer, with Raintree Financial. If you’re looking for non-market, private investments, he’s the guy to call.

And he looks good too.
